In general, the patent bar is considered to be a difficult exam. The USPTO releases data each year on the pass rate. Over the last five years about 2,000 people have taken the exam each year, and the average pass rate has been about 46%

Despite the low pass numbers, the patent bar is something that you can absolutely pass with the proper preparation. Part of that preparation is understanding some of the reasons why the exam is difficult and different from other exams you may have taken in the past.

Timing: The patent bar is given in two three hour sessions in a single day. Each session contains 50 multiple choice questions. Of the 100 total questions, 10 are unscored beta questions. To pass the exam, you need to get 70% of the scored questions (or 63 questions) correct.
Six hours may sound like plenty of time, but many patent bar questions are lengthy and fact-heavy. Some questions also require you to find information in the MPEP or other exam source materials. Learning to recognize what a question is asking and efficiently find the relevant information can make a huge difference.

Vast amount of material: the patent bar covers the material in the MPEP and other designated source materials. The MPEP is a massive manual, and there is way too much information to memorize.
Instead, successful patent bar preparation requires a combination of knowing the most important material and knowing how to find information efficiently, especially since the exam MPEP interface is notoriously clunky and slow.

No recent released exams: The last time the USPTO released official questions was in 2003, and a lot has changed about the law since then! That being said, the format of the questions has not changed too much over the years, so the released exams are still a worthy resource. Patent Bar Unlocked uses all of the released USPTO questions, updated for modern laws as study materials and in practice exams. The released USPTO exams can also be found as PDFs online.
